What is school social work and what can school social workers do?
School Social Work is a specialized practice area within the profession of social work. The goal of school social work is to promote academic success by reducing social, emotional, economic and environmental barriers to learning.
As a school social worker I help the student build upon his/her strengths rather than focusing on deficits. I strive to build partnerships between families and the school which in turn enhances student learning. In my role as part of the multidisciplinary educational team, I provide the following services:
*assessment and screening
*individual counseling and support groups
*services to families
*services to school staff
*coordination of community agency services
*program resources and policy development.
I obtained my undergraduate degree in Social Work from the College of Saint Scholastica in Duluth, MN. I received my Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work from the School of Social Services, Catholic University in Washington D.C.
I hold two professional licenses:
*Licensed School Social Worker through the MN Department of Education.
*Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) through the MN Board of Social Work.
