Jumping for a Cause

The past four years Kingsland Middle School and Elementary school have participated in Hoops for Heart (KMS) and Jump Rope for Heart (KES).  The purpose of Jump Rope for Heart is to raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association that they put toward research for Heart disease.  Here are some facts about heart disease in America from the Center for Disease Control (CDC)

  • About 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year–that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.1
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2009 were in men.1
  • Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing nearly 380,000 people annually.1
  • Every year about 720,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 515,000 are a first heart attack and 205,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack.2
  • Coronary heart disease alone costs the United States $108.9 billion each year.3 This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity.

Studies have shown that physical fitness is a great way to reduce your probability for Heart Disease.

By participating in Jump Rope for Heart our students are learning that physical fitness is an important aspect in each of their lives and that it can be fun when we are being physically active.  We are also raising awareness and money to go to the American Heart Association to help research treatments and cures for those that have heart disease.
